If you're thinking about rewiring your home, you're probably wondering what to expect.
Rewiring can be a big job, but it's also a chance to improve the safety and security of your home. In this post, we'll outline some of the most important things to keep in mind when rewiring your house. We'll also discuss some of the benefits of rewiring, so you can decide if it's the right choice for you. Thanks for reading!
Why do homes require rewiring, and why is it so vital?
Your electrical system is responsible for providing power to every appliance and light fitting in your home, so it’s no surprise that over time, it can become outdated or overloaded.
Wiring regulations are updated regularly, and your wiring must be up to date. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can pose a serious safety hazard. Outdated wiring can cause electrical fires, and it may not be able to handle the electrical load of modern appliances. As a result, homes that do not have updated wiring are at a higher risk of experiencing an electrical outage or fire. While rewiring a home can be a daunting task, it is essential for ensuring the safety of your family and your property.
What are the benefits of rewiring your home?
In addition to improved safety, several other benefits come with rewiring your home.
One of the most important benefits is that it can potentially increase the value of your property. If you ever decide to sell your home, potential buyers will be more interested in a property that has been properly maintained. It's also good for buyers, as they know they don't need to worry about the electrics for a long time.
Rewiring your home can also give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your property is safe and up to date. Whether you’re planning to sell your home or just want to be prepared for the future, rewiring is a smart investment.
Does my home need rewiring?
Most homes need to be rewired roughly every 40 years. If you live in an older home, or one that has undergone major renovations, your wiring will likely need to be updated.
If you’re not sure whether your home needs to be rewired, there are a few signs to look out for.
First, look at your sockets or switches. If they’re discoloured or feel warm to the touch, this is an indication that your electrical system needs looking at urgently. By also looking at them, you can usually tell if they look old or not. Do remember though, that new faceplates do not mean it's been rewired.
If you have flickering lights, frequently blown fuses, or outlets that don’t work, these are all signs that your home may need to be rewired.
EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report)
The only way to be certain if your home needs a rewire is to ask an electrician to come and do an electrical safety check. They will do what's called an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), which is a thorough examination of your home’s electrics.
An EICR will identify any areas that need to be improved or replaced and will give you a clear idea of the work that needs to be done. It's important to get an EICR done roughly every 5 years, even if you don't think there's anything wrong with your electrics.
What's next?
If you think your home needs to be rewired, the next step is to find a qualified electrician.
When looking for an electrician, always make sure they are registered with a scheme like NICEIC or NAPIT. Here at Allman Electrical, we are registered with NICEIC. Finding someone registered will give you peace of mind that they are qualified to do the job.
