Are you rewiring your home?
Rewiring your home can be a daunting task, but it's also a very rewarding one. You'll end up with a brand new electrical system that will serve you well for many years to come.
We want to help make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible for you. That's why we've put together this guide, which will walk you through what you can expect during your house rewire. We hope you find it helpful!
What can you expect during a rewire?
Rewiring a home is a major project, and creates a lot of mess. During a full rewire, your electrician will need to replace all the old cables in your walls, with new cables. This process will almost always cause damage to your plaster which will need to be repaired once the job is finished.
Your electrician will also need to install new sockets, switches, and light fixtures. The entire process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size of your home.
Do I need to move out or can I stay at home?
No, you don’t need to move out while your home is being rewired. However, it’s important to be aware that there will be a lot of noise and disruption. If you have young children or are sensitive to noise, you may want to make other arrangements during the rewiring process.
At Allman Electrical we offer discounts to those who choose to vacate their homes during a rewire, as this saves us time cleaning, putting floorboards back down, and moving items back each night.
If you do opt to remain in your home, we will tidy up as best as we can each night, however, there will still be a great deal of dust and mess.
Will my electricians do anything to make my rewire go as smoothly as possible?
At Allman Electrical, we try our hardest to make your rewire to be the best it can be. By using dust sheets, floor protection, and by tidying up every night (if you are living in the property), we can minimize the disruption to your home life.
We also try to only create noise during daytime hours, however, sometimes this is not possible. We understand that neighbours do not want to come home from a day at work, to the sound of drilling, so we always try to be considerate.
Where necessary, we will communicate with you about what we plan on doing each day, so that you know roughly what to expect when you return home. If we have any specific questions for you during the rewire, we will always call to ask, rather than just going ahead and doing something.
We can also help you organise other trades, like a plasterer or decorator, to come in once we’ve finished, so that your home can be back to normal as soon as possible.
How can you make the electrician's life easier during a rewire?
There are a few things you can do to make the rewiring process go as smoothly as possible.
First, it’s important to clear out any areas that the electrician will be working in. This includes removing as much furniture, paintings, or other items from the walls. Leaving couches, and beds are perfectly fine as we can move these during the rewire.
Boxing up small items, and putting them out of the way, makes a huge difference, as it will take us less time to move things around if needed, but also save time when cleaning.
If you have pets, these cannot be anywhere near where we are working. As well as being dangerous for your pets, they can also be a distraction to the electrician.
It is also important to make sure that there is clear access to the consumer unit (fuse box). We will need to be able to access it during the entire rewire, as all circuits start from this point. At the end of the rewire we then do a lot of testing of the new circuits here.
Additionally, it is also helpful if you can provide us with a parking space, close to the entrance to the property.
Finally, if you have any questions or concerns, it’s always best to ask the electrician before they start work. This way, they can address any concerns you may have, and make sure that everything goes according to plan.
