What is a community public access defibrillator?🤔
A community public access defibrillator or CPAD, is a defibrillator available day and night within a community. It’s available for use 24 hours a day by all members of the public. Defibrillators are devices used to treat life threatening cardiac arrest. A defibrillator works by applying an electronic charge to the heart to replicate a stable heartbeat. A public access defibrillator can be used anyone – you do not need to have prior training. All you’re required to do is call 999 to gain an access code, which will unlock the defibrillator from its casing and your call operator with instruct you through the next steps.
Installing a public access defibrillator – considerations:
A defibrillator should only ever be installed by a qualified electrician. This is to ensure the equipment remains reliable and effective. Although power is not required for the defibrillator itself (a lithium battery is responsible) the cabinet in which the defibrillator is located does. Power is needed to control the lock, lighting & possibly a heating panel.
- Location: The location of a public access defibrillator is very important. A defibrillator can be installed on a wide range of public accessed external walls and even telephone boxes. The defibrillator must have clear, easy access and be easily located by all.
- Maintenance: After the defibrillator has been installed, it’s recommended you appoint someone to be responsible for maintaining the defibrillator under guidance set by the manufacturer.
- Costs: On average, most defibrillator pads have an expiry date of 18 months. You should also note the battery which powers the defibrillator has an average lifespan of around 4 years.
Why is a defibrillator cabinet locked?🔐
Unfortunately, public access defibrillators are often vandalised or stolen if left unlocked. To prevent this, they are installed within a casing which is code locked. If you require access, call 999 and the operator will be able to provide you with the correct key code to unlock the cabinet. The electronic cabinet also protects them from being tampered with or vandalised which can make instructions hard to read.
Which premises need a public access defibrillator?
Currently, schools are the only premises by law which require a defibrillator is installed onsite. You should note though, immediate CPR and defibrillation can more than double a person’s chance of cardiac arrest survival.
