Allman Electrical Services were really most excellent. I would recommend them to everybody.
We are all well aware of the devastating effects carbon emissions have on our planet – one sure way to combat this is going green and driving electric. If you’re considering an electric vehicle the first thing you need to do it figure out where you will charge it and unfortunately, not everyone will have sufficient infrastructure to do so at their Bromsgrove home.
Is my home suitable for an EV charger?🚗
To install an EV charging point within your home, the property must meet a few certain requirements, these include:
- Access to a driveway, garage, or carport.
- The charger is at least two metres from any form of public highway.
- Complete property ownership (or formal permission from the owner).
- WIFI & power supply access.
When installing an EV charger, off-street parking is required by law. Typically, this is either a garage or driveway. If you do not have access to a driveway or any other form of off-street parking where power supply can be provided, you will not be able to charge an electric vehicle from your home. You should also ensure WIFI can be reached to the EV charger for optimal efficiency. Your EV charger must not be a minimum of two metres way from any kind of public highway. It also must not be installed any lower than 750 mm from the ground.
Unfortunately, this does mean a large quantity of people across the UK cannot drive electric until there is sufficient EV charging infrastructure within their local community. In time, the government has assured EV charging infrastructure will improve – patience is key here! With demand increasing drastically, you can now rent out your EV charging to people within your local community on various apps.
Thankfully, any building development with parking now needs to have access to an electric car charging point. This is great news for new home buyers as it will save them hundreds of pounds! Additionally, any other buildings undergoing large-scale redevelopments will also be required to install an EV charger if they have over 10 parking spaces on site.
EV charging requirements - Fuseboard upgrades📝
Before installing an EV charger, you should also consider your existing electrical system. Older, outdated electrical systems will require a new fuseboard (consumer unit) to cope with the additional pressure. Often, an EV charger will require its own separate consumer unit if the existing system does not provide what’s known as a ‘spare way.’
